Interview with PopWonders CEO Sean Leong
SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE, SEAN! LET’S START, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHO IS SEAN LEONG IN YOUR OWN WORDS?
Adventurist. Hustler. Creative. Inviting. Hard-working. These words all describe aspects of my personality, of my journey as an IT professional and startup owner. But there is only one word above all the singularly describe me, and everything I am: Entrepreneurial. I believe anything is possible, I see opportunity when others see impossibility.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR POPWONDERS?
The idea that PopWonders is propping up a retail fad, what the company does is help small business owners start an e-commerce business in subscription model.
In business, it can be easy to focus on individual sales, and talking about “the deal”. But companies who focus beyond individual transactions, and more on building ongoing relationships with those making the transaction, tend to be in business longer. Which is those building customer-centric businesses in today’s environment are finding success in offering subscription-based products and services.
The idea of the platform is to help online sellers and merchants in the slowing economy, especially with the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, to have dependable recurring revenue for business to be sustainable.
TELL US MORE HOW THIS BUSINESS MODEL CAN DISRUPT THE WAY WE SHOP?
PopWonders gives pre-existing businesses — or really any business with an existing audience or loyal clientele — a way to launch a monthly subscription service that makes sense for their individual companies. PopWonders handles all the financial transaction activity, gives you tools to track and manage inventory, prints shipping labels, a custom-designed splash page, and offers a set of analytics to see how people are responding to those shipments month-to-month.
It’s sustainable. It keeps coming as opposed to a transactional business where you’re just selling things online. It can just go away, and that doesn’t really happen with subscription businesses.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ACADEMIC HISTORY AND PAST WORK EXPERIENCE?
I graduated BSc (Hons) Degree in Information Technology from University of Greenwich, UK; Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Cardiff Metropolitan University, and pursuing my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science now.
I have over 15 years of experience focusing on eBiz consulting, enterprise security, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, e-discovery and forensic investigation, IT audit, OSS development, web design & solution, cyber competitive intelligence, eCommerce management, and strategy planning.
My past experiences include with Fortune 500 and MNCs companies like KPMG, AIG, DHL and AXA as InfoSec consultant and advisor.
My latest research developments are related to artificial intelligence, neural network, mixed reality, blockchain & cryptocurrency, honeypot & cyber threat intelligence.

Along with the entrepreneurial journey, I was fortunate to be selected and awarded with the world most recognized programs including MIT Global Entrepreneurship Bootcamp by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford Go2Market Program by Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Dream Factory by MyStartr, Selangor Acceleration Program (SAP) by SITEC, Global Acceleration Program (GAP) by MaGIC and invitation by the Korea Ministry of Science and ICT & National IT Industry Promotion Agency to assist Korean’s government on evolution into a prominent startup business hub in Asia.
TELL US ANYTHING ABOUT YOU THAT IS NOT RELATED TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)?
I am a certified competent antique appraiser for US, England and Canada. And owned an antique and vintage collectables store.
