USA Hair : How the company started & thrives in a digital world. Interview with Sam Conan, the Founder & CEO

Hello Sam Conan, Welcome to ABOUT INSIDER! When was USA Hair founded?
USA Hair was founded in 2013. It is crazy to think that we will be coming up on a decade here soon! Time sure does fly. 

What would you say is the mission of USA Hair?
To truly provide quality hair extensions at affordable prices. We don’t spend a bunch of money on celebrity endorsements and mark the price up like crazy. USA Hair looks to pass on the savings to the customers. In the end, it’s a win-win situation for both the customer and business. In turn, we have built a wonderful community of loyal customers that love to show off their new hairstyles!

Why did you decide to become a business owner?
I’ve always wanted to work for myself. Although it may seem scary in the beginning stages, it is definitely the way to go in the long run! Yes you work hard, but you are working hard for yourself and your family. Not a big corporation. I feel lucky to have learned so much over the years! Creating an online business is a lot different than creating one in your local neighborhood. It was a big learning curve but we are doing great now. And we can’t wait to see what the next 10 years has to offer. 

For someone who starts an ecommerce business in 2022, what advice would you give them?
Make sure you have a solid business plan in place! Understand how you will scale, if that’s indeed what you want to do. Look to take advantage of all the great software that is continuously being developed. Examples include: 

  • Shopify
  • Cloudflare
  • MailChimp
  • Slack 
  • Trello
  • Gusto
  • Zapier

We can go all day here! There is a lot of great software out there built to help small businesses thrive online. 

Who has been your greatest inspiration?
I wouldn’t say just one person. It’s really been all of the people that have looked to adjust and thrive in different ways as the world has really gone through some tough challenges over the past couple of years. 

There are so many articles of creative people who have launched new businesses and thrived in a short amount of time. If you follow a website like TechCrunch, you will see these kinds of things happening all the time! It truly is inspiring to see. 

How do you look to market your products?
While we do still engage in some traditional marketing strategies, our main focus is in the digital space. Traffic from search engines and social media have been our bread in butter. We also have an email marketing team as well as a paid media team. 

What have you learned since entering the US Market?
We actually are the founders of Canada Hair as well. However, entering the US market has definitely had its own challenges. But we have looked to do everything needed to get the business up and running. We operate out of Houston, Texas.
