In recognition of his significant contributions to advancing diversity in golf, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry has been selected to receive the prestigious Charlie Sifford Award. This award serves as a testament to Curry’s unwavering commitment to promoting equity, access, and opportunity in the world of golf.

Two years ago, Curry initiated “Underrated Golf,” a commendable initiative dedicated to providing these essential pillars of growth to high school athletes hailing from all communities. The program’s overarching goal is to create a level playing field, ensuring that societal constraints do not hold back young, talented golfers.

One of Curry’s most notable contributions to promoting diversity in golf is his remarkable support for the Howard University golf team. He has generously funded the team for six years, enabling the historically Black institution to compete at the Division I level. Howard University had not fielded a golf team since the 1970s, and Curry’s backing has breathed new life into this historic institution’s golf program.

The Charlie Sifford Award, created in 2021, is dedicated to honoring individuals who exemplify Charlie Sifford’s groundbreaking achievements in the world of golf. Sifford, who became the first Black player to earn PGA Tour membership in 1961, was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004. This award pays homage to his unwavering perseverance, confidence, respect, and adaptability.

Stephen Curry, known for his exceptional skills on the basketball court, expressed his gratitude for being chosen as this year’s recipient of the Charlie Sifford Award. The award will be presented to Curry during the World Golf Hall of Fame ceremony, which will take place at Pinehurst, North Carolina, on June 10, just ahead of the U.S. Open.

In his statement, Curry reflected on his passion for the sport and his belief in the potential for growth in golf through equity, access, and opportunity. He stated, “I believe that we have the opportunity to grow the game of golf by providing equity, access, and opportunity to young golfers who have that same passion, dedication, and determination as so many of us out on the green.”

Stephen Curry’s recognition with the Charlie Sifford Award celebrates his extraordinary contributions and serves as a beacon of hope for a future of more diverse and inclusive participation in golf. His commitment to promoting equity and opportunity in golf is a shining example of how athletes can make a lasting impact on and off the field of play.
