Southern Company names Chris Womack to head Georgia Power

Georgia Power CEO, chairman and president Paul Bowers is scheduled to retire from his role next year, he joined Southern Company in 1979 at Gulf Power and has served as Georgia Power’s chairman, president and CEO for 11 years.

Southern Company stated that Chris Womack, executive vice president and president of external affairs, has been chosen by the Georgia Power Board of Directors to succeed Paul Bowers as chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power.

He will be the first African American CEO of Georgia Power, which was founded in 1902. Womack started his present role in 2009 and has led overall external positional and branding efforts for Southern Company, including public policy strategies, and has managed the organisation’s governmental and regulatory affairs along with corporate communication initiatives.

A native of Greenville, Alabama, Womack holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree from The American University. He completed the Stanford Executive Program and is a member of the Leadership Atlanta class of 2000 and the Leadership Birmingham class of 1990.
