Marilyn Hucek talks music, following your dreams and her song “What?”

Marilyn Hucek is a fashion blogger turned singer-songwriter. She worked for 5 years in the NYC corporate fashion industry before acting on her dreams of becoming a singer. Born in Washington D.C., Marilyn currently resides in New York City. Her sound and feel has been compared to artists like Taylor Swift, and Ellie Goulding.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME TO CHAT WITH US. WHAT FIRST GOT YOU INTO MUSIC?
Thank you! My parents! Music was their love language…but literally! They didn’t really speak each other’s native language when they first met in a piano room at a university in Chile, and they connected through music. My dad played piano and my mom the guitar and flute. My mom was studying to be a professional musician but chose to follow love and move to the US to marry my father.

I grew up with music all around. When I was little my mom would set up a stage for me and my siblings to perform karaoke. We would dress up, and my brother would be in charge of the production and flick the lights etc. My mom was the audience along with our stuffed animals and she would always clap after each performance.

I remember I had purple cowgirl boots I loved. I would dance and sing to the Spice Girls, and many others. Me and my sister would take turns being each other’s background dancers.

YOUR FIRST SINGLE “MEMORIES” WAS A HUGE SUCCESS. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR SECOND SINGLE “WHAT?” AND YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND IT.
Thank you! What? was born from my experience in quarantine over the summer. It was a huge adjustment and transition and the feelings and experience was hard to ignore. Even though I had written many other songs this was the one I wanted to produce next because it felt so true to me at the time. I couldn’t avoid the feelings and it was cathartic to write and sing about it. I thought people needed a song they could relate to but also give them hope and optimism. It serves as a friendly reminder about the silver lining of it all, but also of the historical moments that happened and in years to come we will not forget because this song exists to tell the tale of what I and many other people went through.

JUST LIKE THE MTV VMAS BEST MUSIC VIDEO FROM HOME CATEGORY, YOUR SECOND RELEASE, “WHAT?”, WAS FILMED UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF QUARANTINE. WE ARE IMPRESSED! WAS IT DIFFICULT TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN?
Thank you! It was and it wasn’t. I didn’t know if I was going to go that route because when you film a music video under those circumstances you lose a certain level of quality and professionalism. However, once again you can’t ignore the facts about the global pandemic and the circumstance it put us all in. So I decided to make an exception, be creative, and in the end truly just followed my gut.

The idea came to me and I ran with it. It makes sense to me and there’s no better way to deal with the quarantine than to express yourself through music and dance! Other than that it wasn’t difficult because I partnered with an experienced dancer who was able to interpret the song her own way. One of my favorite things to do is to collaborate with other artists to create magic.

HOW DID YOU STAY CREATIVE DURING THIS CHALLENGING TIME?
Easy, I sing and write songs! No but I feel you it’s hard. Obviously our options are limited, but I’m optimistic about it and try to always find balance. I do the things I like to do in a day. I always workout, and try to get fresh air, and create special moments with my loved ones like a bonfire, picnic or movie night.

I like to cook, and go on hikes. I’m remodeling and redesigning my home. There’s always something to do! I get inspired by feelings and people’s stories. I’ll take a situation and write a song about that perspective. The inspo never ends because people are so complex and deeply layered.

I like to do things that challenge me and always continue learning. I ran a marathon last year and now I’m re-learning piano! I’m also a very spontaneous person. I recently booked a trip to Mexico only 4 days before departure! I gained a lot of inspiration through that trip. Travel helps inspire but learning about anything new, and putting yourself in new situations does as well! That could be as simple as watching a documentary or reading a book.

IF YOU COULD GO OPEN A SHOW FOR ANY ARTIST WHO WOULD IT BE?
Taylor Swift would be a dream!

WHAT IS ONE MESSAGE YOU WOULD GIVE TO YOUR FANS?
One message that’s tough. A message that resonates with me right now is to follow your dreams! Sometimes it takes a major change for you to realize what you really want to do and to step away from the routine and I just want every person to have no regrets about that and to give every dream a fighting chance.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN AND YOU COULD SHARE WITH US?
Hmmmm. Advice. I would say a motto that I love is “fake it till you make it”! Does that work?!

YOUR SOUND WAS COMPARED TO INCREDIBLE ARTISTS LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT. WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH?
That’s a tough one, but it depends on the song! It would be an honor to collaborate with any of the greats! Maybe even a Latino rapper/singer! That could be cool.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
I’m releasing my next song in November so be on the lookout! I’ll share more info on my Instagram @marilynhucek as we get closer. It’s going to be a fun one!!
