IPL: 5 Players who have got out on 99 most times

Getting out on 99 is probably more painful than going for a duck. To have thwarted all challenges to reach the century mark but fail by just one run has to hurt any player. This happening in the shortest form of the game i.e. T20 cricket would be even more excruciating for any player since it is the most difficult achievement.

In this article, we are going to list five occasions where players were out on 99 in an IPL game.

Virat Kohli (RCB vs DD-2013)

Arguably the most popular cricket player in the world, Virat Kohli is the first name on this list. The right-hand batter ranks second in the list of the most number of centuries in IPL (5). He would have ranked joint top with Chris Gayle if he had made just one run against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the 57th match of the Indian Premier League 2013.

Unfortunately for the batter however he was dismissed at 99 becoming the first player in IPL to get this unlucky achievement.

Prithvi Shaw(DC vs KKR – 2019)

Chasing a target of 186 against KKR, the Delhi Capitals batter Prithvi Shaw got out at 99 becoming only the second player to do so in IPL. Shaw played a sensational knock of 99 off just 55 deliveries with a strike rate of 180 with 3 sixes and 12 fours.

In the end, Delhi Capitals managed to win the match in a thrilling Super over.

Ishan Kishan (MI vs RCB- 2020)

The exciting southpaw brought Mumbai Indians to the verge of a thrilling win against Royal Challengers in the 10th match of the IPL 2020. Kishan however failed to get a win for MI as his inning saw a disappointing end after he was out at 99 on the second last ball of the match.

As a result of his dismissal, the match was tied and RCB went on to win the match in a Super Over in one of the of the most-talking cricket news of the 2020 edition.

Chris Gayle(KXIP vs RR- 2020)

Playing for Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) the Universe Boss played a magnificent knock wherein he dismissed innumerable balls to the boundary line. He however ran out of luck on 99 and became the 4th player in IPL history to be knocked out a run short of a century.

Rajasthan Royals easily managed to chase down the 186 runs target in just 18 overs.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK vs SRH- 2022)

The latest batter to be out on 99 in the IPL is Ruturaj Gaikwad. Playing for Chennai Super Kings, Gaikwad smashed SRH’s bowlers to all parts of the ground before getting out by T Natarajan on 99.

CSK managed to reach 202/2 and won the match by 13 runs on the back of Gaikwad’s failed century knock.
