Interview with Music Producer & Composer Marcus Bell

HEY MARCUS! THANKS FOR TAKING TIME TO CHAT WITH US! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
I stand for dignity and compassion for myself and others. I am looking to impact the narratives in society through the music I write and produce. I care about the upliftment of humanity. As an entrepreneur, father, and mentor, I want to positively impact the lives of as many people of color as well as possible.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE? HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED MUCH OVER THE YEARS?
I’d say my style is Motivational R&B/ Hip-Hop influenced Music. My aim is for my music to mostly bring forth love and light although I do express heartbreak and upset sometimes.

HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED MUCH OVER THE YEARS?
It has gone through many changes as different genres have become popular. Because I’m such a student of music, I study and create music in new genres I hear and like. When I first started producing I had a real jazz infusion in the music, then it shifted to more neo-soul. Then I started traveling internationally and getting exposed to different cultures and my music had a lot of EDM and world music elements. Now I think I’m back to my R&B/Hip-Hop vibes.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR ARTISTIC INSPIRATION?
Some people say they get writer’s block but I’ve never experienced that in my musical life. For lyrics, I get inspired by words, ideas, conversations, arguments, eavesdropping, journaling, reading posts in social media, and most recently listening to conversations in Clubhouse. For music and production, I get inspired by listening to unpopular genres and artists new and old as well as I listen to classic hit songs.

WHAT’S YOUR PROCESS LIKE FOR MAKING MUSIC?
I write or create some music idea every single day of my life. Whether it is a voice note, a hook title, a lyric idea, a track, or a completed song, I live and breathe music creation to the point where it is just a part of my daily activity.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO GROW YOUR PERSONAL BRAND?
I’ve been studying branding and marketing for as long as I can remember. It was always a topic of conversation in my entrepreneurial family. As I keep evolving, so does my brand. I’m mainly focused on providing as much value as I can everywhere I can. When people engage with me, like in this interview, I get the blessing of their attention. When they engage with my music I get the blessing of their listening. To me, brand growth is all about the exchange of value.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO A BUDDING ARTIST?
Develop a primary aim for your career and create some kind of consistent activity to do every single day that can get you closer to that aim. It’s the first step in the 100daysMusicChallenge I’m excited to bring to the creative world for 2021.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?
I’d like to offer the readers a life-consideration. Please take advantage of every moment to be with the people you love and care about. In these days and times, it is important to value the things we may have taken for granted in the past. I used to take for granted that my parents would always be around. I never thought they’d both pass one day. It just wasn’t something on my mind at all. Now that they are gone I try and encourage people to interview their family and learn about their family’s lives. Fortunately, I had the chance to interview my parents and in that process, I even learned new things about my own life. Value every moment.

WHERE CAN OUR READERS FIND YOU ONLINE?
They can find me across social media @bellringermusic or go to imunstoppable.com to get a complimentary workbook I put together to help people access being unstoppable in their lives.
