Luke Judy is best known for his recurring regular role on “Fresh Off the Boat” as well as guest starring roles on “Evil”, “9-1-1”, “Teachers”, and “The Vampire Diaries”. Since his start in commercials Luke has been working constantly amassing quite the resume including a role in Universal Pictures blockbuster action movie “Pacific Rim: Uprising”. Some of his favorite film roles, however, are the ones when he works alongside his sister Savannah Judy. Together they have appeared in five hit films such as “Christmas With the Andersons”, “A Soldier’s Revenge”, “Special Unit”, and the award winning film “Bombshell”.
In addition to their film work, these talented siblings play gigs all over LA as lead singers in their own band Duplexity. Duplexity has just released their first original EP entitled Billboards. The EP contains the hits Billboards, Drop the Act, Demons, Black Dress, and Breaks My Heart. They are hard at work on another 5 song EP to be released in 2024. Passionate about giving back, Luke supports animal charities as well as St. Jude.
HI, WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER! THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO CHAT WITH US! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHO IS LUKE JUDY IN YOUR OWN WORDS?
My name is Luke Judy, I live in LA. I moved here when I was 6 years old for acting opportunities with my family. My best friend is my sister Savannah Judy, we have done a lot of projects together in the entertainment arena. Most recently we formed an indie rock duo called Duplexity (which means duo).
YOU’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH AN IMPRESSIVE LIST OF ACTORS AND ACTRESSES IN BOTH TELEVISION AND FILM. CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FROM YOUR TIME ON THE SET OF “FRESH OFF THE BOAT” OR ANY OTHER PROJECT THAT HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU?
I would have to say the job that has had the most memorable or impactful experience would have to be “A Woman Deceived” because it was that film that I met Michael Feifer. He is the director of that film and many more that Savannah and I starred in. He has become a family friend and if he wouldn’t have booked me for that role, we never would have met him and had so many great memories!
YOUR COLLABORATION WITH YOUR SISTER, SAVANNAH JUDY, IN SEVERAL FILMS AND AS LEAD SINGERS IN THE BAND DUPLEXITY IS REMARKABLE. HOW DOES YOUR SHARED PASSION FOR THE ARTS INFLUENCE YOUR CREATIVE WORK TOGETHER?
Collaborating with Savannah is the best. Every project we have worked on together, has been my favorite! This is why when we wanted to start making music there was no other option than forming a duo. Her love of music and determination is admirable and the reason I wanted to start learning guitar and making original music.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST MUSIC PROJECT WITH DUPLEXITY, “BILLBOARDS.” WHAT INSPIRED THE EP, AND CAN YOU SHARE SOME INSIGHTS INTO YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS AS MUSICIANS?
Billboard’s is an eclectic mix of 5 songs. One duet, 2 where I sing the lead and 2 where Savannah sings lead. On some of the songs I sing back up and on some Savannah sings back up. When we perform live, I play guitar on some and she plays bass on most. All the songs are inspired by our life experiences both in the entertainment industry and our personal life.
“PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING” WAS A BLOCKBUSTER ACTION MOVIE THAT GAINED SIGNIFICANT ATTENTION. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ON SUCH A HIGH-PROFILE PROJECT ALONGSIDE TALENTS LIKE SCOTT EASTWOOD AND CHARLIE DAY?
“Pacific Rim Uprising” was a huge studio film that I was lucky to have a small part in. I was pretty young but I remember feeling like “wow, this is so cool”. Everyone was great on set, from production to the cast. We filmed on The Santa Monica Pier and after we wrapped my parents took us on all the rides at the pier. It was a really awesome experience.
YOU MENTIONED YOUR COMMITMENT TO GIVING BACK, PARTICULARLY TO ANIMAL CHARITIES AND ST. JUDE. WHAT DRIVES YOUR PASSION FOR PHILANTHROPY, AND DO YOU HAVE ANY MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES OR INITIATIVES YOU’D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT?
When I was little I was a pretty sick kid. I was always at the doctor’s office and sometimes at the hospital. I remember one time our pediatrician told us about St. Jude and all the support they give to families of sick kids. Ever since then St. Jude has been our favorite organization to support. I would love to one day be involved with or start a non-profit for underprivileged kids with asthma. The medication is very expensive and I think an organization that could help families get their asthma medication is greatly needed.
WITH A BUSY CAREER, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HOBBIES AND ACTIVITIES THAT HELP YOU UNWIND AND RECHARGE DURING YOUR DOWNTIME?
My favorite thing to do to relax and when I have downtime is to play guitar, board games with my family, and video games. I love learning new songs on the guitar, coming up with new songs and playing video games with Savannah and our friends. We also like to play Guitar Hero. It’s the best blend of my two hobbies: music and video games.
THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CAN BE FAST-PACED AND DEMANDING. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING ACTORS AND MUSICIANS WHO ARE LOOKING TO MAKE THEIR MARK IN THE FIELD BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES?
My best advice for anyone wanting to start acting or music is; it’s a marathon not a sprint. A wise actor told us this when we first started and it is still our mantra today, almost 11 years later. Another piece of advice is to not take it personally if you don’t get a job. Just keep your chin up and be proud of yourself.
LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT EXCITING PROJECTS CAN YOUR FANS AND FOLLOWERS ANTICIPATE FROM LUKE JUDY IN 2024 AND BEYOND?
We have so much to look forward to in 2024. We have more original songs coming out, music videos that we will be premiering, and we will be performing more regularly. We are also eventually releasing an album.
WHAT’S SOMETHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US?
One thing that might surprise people is that I am left handed. When I was little I had a teacher who wanted to make me write with my right hand to train my brain to not be left handed. My parents said no way and encouraged me to be me.
WHAT IS ONE MESSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE TO YOUR FANS?
My message to my fans and to everyone is to BE KIND! If more people would just be kind and have more understanding, the world would be a better place. My mom always says “kindness is free”. I didn’t understand what that meant when I was little but it’s true. Everyone should be more kind, it costs them nothing and can mean the world to someone.
