Finnish Minister Sanna Marin, to become the world’s youngest PM

Finnish Minister Sanna Marin, aged 34, will be the world’s youngest prime minister as head of a women-led coalition government in Finland.

Marin is the transportation minister, she was picked by her Social Democratic party for the position of the PM after PM Antti Rinne quit. Marin is expected to be sworn in this week. She will be leading a Centre-left coalition of five parties all of them are headed by women.

Mr Rinne had to step down after losing the confidence of a coalition member over his handling of a postal strike.

When she takes charge, Ms Marin will become the world’s youngest sitting prime minister. However, countries like New Zealand and Ukrainian already have young PMs, PM of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern is 39, while Ukrainian premier Oleksiy Honcharuk is 35.

In a statement Ms Marin said, “We have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust.”

According to reports, Ms Marin won the vote by a narrow margin. She however, brushed away all the questions about her age, and said, “I have never thought about my age or gender, I think of the reasons I got into politics and those things for which we have won the trust of the electorate.”

Ms Marin is going to be the third-ever female prime minister in the Nordic nation. The Social Democrats came out to be the largest party in elections that were held in April, and so they got the right to appoint the prime minister who leads the coalition government.

According to reports, Sanne Marin was raised by a single mother and she was the first person in her family who went to the university.

Marin has served as the party’s vice chairwoman, a lawmaker since 2015 and has also served as until this week as the minster for transport and communications in Finland.

Currently, Finland holds the European Union’s rotating presidency.
