Everything That We Need for a Work from Home Set-Up

I have worked from home for over 10 years and I can tell you that for a more productive work-from-home set-up, you need a well-planned set-up. The right gear, software, and environment will make you more productive, efficient, and happier.

If you’re new to working from home or have been doing it for a while and feel like your setup could use some tweaking, here are my suggestions on what you need to make sure you are as effective as possible:

A Laptop

You need a laptop. A laptop will be your workstation and a place to store all of your files.

You don’t need a fancy computer or one that’s super high-end, but you do need one with enough power to run the software you’ll use and perform other functions in the background while you’re working on your assignments.

Set Up Laptop as A Second Monitor

A laptop or tablet can also double as a computer monitor if needed, so if it’s not already something you have, consider investing in one before moving forward with this type of work.

An Internet Connection

It’s no secret that the internet is an essential part of modern life especially when it comes to working from home.

To get started with your home business, you’ll need an internet connection that allows for high-speed speeds (at least 10 Mbps) in order to maintain a good connection with clients and colleagues around the world.

A phone (And Answering Machine/Service)

It’s important to have a phone so that you can answer calls when they come in. An answering machine or service is helpful if you don’t want to miss calls when you’re not at home.

You should also consider having two phones; one for personal use and one for business use only. This will help prevent any confusion between your personal and professional lives when someone calls asking for one or the other.

Printer and Scanner

These are essential for printing documents and scanning them into your computer. If you don’t already have these devices, check out our guide on how to choose a printer. It’s important to choose a printer service technician who is knowledgeable, experienced, and has a proven track record of providing excellent service.

A Comfortable Chair And A Desk

You need a chair that is comfortable while still being supportive of your back. If you are sitting for long periods of time, you want your back supported so that it doesn’t hurt or give out on you.

A Comfortable Desk

The desk you choose should be big enough to fit your laptop and any other items that you need to be able to use while working, but not so large that it takes up too much space in your room or office. It also needs to be sturdy enough so that it doesn’t tip over if you put too much weight on one side of it.

If possible, invest in a standing desk so that you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. This will help keep your body moving and prevent muscle strain and stiffness which could lead to injury down the road.

Natural Lighting

Natural light is essential for working from home. Natural light keeps you awake and alert during the day, which means that you will have a more productive workday.

Artificial lights can make it difficult for your eyes to adjust and stay focused throughout the day. If possible, natural lighting should be incorporated into your setup so that you can enjoy the benefits of both types of lighting throughout your day.

Set Up Your Workspace

You might not have an entire room or even a dedicated desk to use as your office, but there are still ways to create one.

If possible, try to find a quiet area in the house where you can spread out and keep all of your work supplies in one place. This will help keep you organized and keep distractions at bay.

Temperature control

A comfortable temperature is also important when working from home since it can affect your productivity level greatly.

If it’s too hot or too cold in your home office space, then it may cause distractions that prevent you from getting work done efficiently.

Make sure that your office has proper ventilation so that there is no risk of overheating or suffocation while you’re working on projects at home. You should also consider purchasing an air conditioner if your home gets too hot during the day.

Cloud-Based Software Application

You may also want to consider cloud-based software applications that allow you to access your information from anywhere. Various options are available and can be very cost-effective depending on what you need to do as far as basic accounting and invoicing is concerned.

Headphones and Noise-Canceling Headphones

You will have distractions when you work from home and sometimes they might be other people in the house. Headphones and noise-canceling headphones will help block out the noise so you can focus on what matters most; getting stuff done.
