Chinese President Xi Jinping scolds Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G-20 summit on November 16 for leaking details of an earlier meeting during which the Canadian PM expressed concern about China’s interference in domestic affairs.
In video footage published by Canadian broadcasters on Wednesday, it can be seen that both leaders are standing close to each other and conversing through a translator at the summit on the Indonesian island of Bali.
“Everything we discussed has been leaked to the paper; that’s not appropriate,” the Chinese Prez said. “And that’s not … the way the conversation was conducted, if there is sincerity on your part,” Xi Jinping added while he was interrupted by Trudeau, who then step towards the Chinese President.
“In Canada, we believe in free and open and frank dialogue and that is what we will continue to have. We will continue to look to work constructively together, but there will be things we will disagree on,” Trudeau replied to Xi Jinping.
Later, the two were seen shaking hands and going their ways as Jinping continued to smile and said, “That’s great, but let’s create the conditions first.” The Canadian PM’s office said that he had raised concerns about Chinese interference in Canadian elections, the war in Ukraine, North Korea and climate change in their conversation.
