Can I use hydrating cleansers for oily skin?

Oily skin is a very common skin type. It is caused by an overproduction of sebum, the natural oil that our skin produces. A greasy face can be frustrating because it often leads to acne and other skin problems. Luckily, there are ways to manage it, and with a few simple steps, you can have clear, healthy skin.

The most common option to manage it is to use products that are specially designed for greasy faces, such as moisturizers, BB creams, cleansers, foundations… However, maybe it is too mainstream to use oily skin products to treat oily skin, there are people who want to try other options, one of them is using hydrating cleansers for oily skin.

But, is it OK?

Can oily skin use hydrating cleansers?

Technically, yes you can. However, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Hydrating cleansers are designed to maintain hydration in your skin, but if you have oily skin, chances are you’ve already done a pretty good job of making sure your skin is getting the hydration that it needs.

Hydrating cleansers are designed to be used on dry skin, or normal skin. Because the primary purpose of hydrating cleansers is to clean your face without completely stripping away all of your skin’s natural moisture, using a hydrating cleanser on greasy faces is not always the best idea. In fact, greasy skin needs special treatment. For example, a primer for greasy skin is made differently than for other skin’s type. Is hydrating cleanser good for oily skin?

No, it isn’t. Since oily face is caused by an overproduction of sebum, it is not advisable to use products that are meant for dry skin, because these may make your face even oilier. You want a cleanser that will remove the oil and grime from your face without completely drying it out or stripping away essential nutrients. Thus, there is no reason to use a hydrating cleanser to treat oily skin. Furthermore, it won’t cost you a hand and a leg to buy a facial cleanser for greasy skin, so there’s no real reason to use them, apart from the fact that it might be fun.

Instead, a foaming cleanser is a more suitable option for greasy faces.
