Brandi Marie King Reveals The Secret to Social Media Stardom

I had the privilege to interview one of the most trending actress and creator on social media. Brandi Marie King is from the United States and has over 318K followers on Instagram and 302K followers/likes on Facebook. I have been following Brandi closely, and after chasing her for long – Finally, I could manage to chat with her and here are the questions I asked:

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHO IS BRANDI MARIE KING IN YOUR OWN WORDS?
Hi everyone! My name is Brandi Marie King and I am an actress and creator. I moved to LA from Sacramento about 5 years ago with no plan but to follow my dreams in the entertainment world. I come from a huge family and I was kid you could always find dancing, reciting lines from my favorite movies and laughing. I knew from a young age I wanted to be in entertainment. I am Cape Verdean, Black, Portuguese and Mexican and love being a part of so many wonderful cultures. A few of my favorite things are: Horror films, Beyoncé, boba, The Office and escape rooms.

YOU ALWAYS TREND ON INSTAGRAM, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SO POPULAR?
When I first started gaining popularity on the internet- it was weird! It made me nervous and I didn’t know how to act lol all of the comments and messages of people telling me “I love you!” definitely took some getting used to. But once I started realizing that people were looking up to me and relied on my content to be entertained, I gained a sense of responsibility and humbleness that feels so amazing.

WHAT IS THAT ONE THING THAT YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN YOUR MIND WHILE PREPARING YOUR CONTENT?
“Would I watch this? Is this funny? Am I teaching something?” I make a variety of content from movie reviews, funny videos, beauty tutorials etc. and I always make sure I make content that I want to watch. It’s easy to get distracted and want to make trendy content, but If I genuinely don’t enjoy it, it will come off that way and feel unnatural. I also like to challenge myself and experiment with new content. For example, I started doing Trader Joe’s snack reviews on Tik Tok, I never would have thought I’d be doing food reviews but I love TJ’s and so do a lot of people so it’s relatable.

YOU WERE ONE OF THE FIRST PIONEERS INTO THIS INDUSTRY ALONGSIDE FELLOW INFLUENCERS KINGBACH, DESTORM, JANINA, AND LELI HERNANDEZ, HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR START AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA INDUSTRY?
When I moved to LA I was set on being an actress and tv host. I was working as an in-house PA learning the ins and outs of production. I ended up meeting the pioneers of Vine at a Superbowl party and shortly after that I was invited to shoot some Vines with a bunch of creators. I had no idea what the app was and didn’t even have an account! But I was intrigued that this was literally their job and it sounded fun to act and create short stories. My first day of shooting I think I did about 6 vines with Liane V, Splack, Wuz Good, Page Kennedy and King Bach. They had me make an account that day and I woke up to about 60,000 followers. I was hooked.

Brandi Marie King Interview

THERE ARE MANY USES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA; TO REACH OUT TO OLD CONNECTIONS, KEEP IN TOUCH WITH LOVED ONES, HOW HAVE YOU LEVERAGED SOCIAL MEDIA AS A CRUCIAL TOOL IN YOUR CAREER AS AN ACTRESS?
Social Media has helped so much. It’s literally my online reel and resumé that I can constantly update. Every picture, caption, and video tells you a little more about me and my personality. Having a large following allows me to work with top brands around the world and I’ve had so many amazing opportunities. I worked with Warner Bros. for Ocean’s 8 and got to interview Cate Blanchette, Sandra Bullock and Awkwafina! I also attend almost every red carpet movie premiere and I’m able to network with top directors and leaders in the industry.

YOU’VE DONE A LOT OF WORK IN NUMEROUS TV SHOWS, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THE DIRECTORS THAT YOU HAVE WORKED WITH THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
Directors are very important to every project and I’ve learned that good directors take the time to learn their actors strengths and weaknesses. I constantly direct my own content and I know what to expect from myself. It’s challenging when I direct others because everyone takes notes differently. At the premiere of “Get Out” directed by Jordan Peele, I was able to speak with him about how he got such incredible performances out of the actors. He said each actor was so different he had to learn their techniques to get their best. Some wanted to rehearse over and over, some wanted to be thrown into action cold and for others improv worked best.

YOU HAVE BUILT UP A FOLLOWING ON INSTAGRAM, WHAT STRATEGIES DID YOU USE TO GROW THE NUMBER OF LIKES AND FOLLOWERS?
Consistency is key. When I started, social media wasn’t as impacted. Instagram didn’t even have videos yet! I quickly learned you have to constantly feed your audience to keep them engaged. I also make sure I diversify my content on all platforms. YouTube is better for longer content while I find Facebook is best for going live. You can’t be afraid to experiment and see what your audience likes. Lastly, you always have to appreciate them and have gratitude. If it weren’t for their support I wouldn’t be here. Giving shoutouts, follows to top fans and giveaways helps me show the love back.

HOW IMPORTANT PERSONAL BRANDING IN YOUR PROFESSION AND WHAT YOU DO TO GROW YOUR BRAND?
Personal branding is the most important. Your own brand and voice is what separates you from everyone else. I could do the same dance on Tik Tok as everyone else but what I’m wearing, the setting and caption can make it a much different video. Authenticity is very important to me so I try to keep my content consistent on the things and hobbies I love so my audience knows this is what they can come to my page for, this is my brand. Comedy, traveling, movies, Beyoncé, family, fashion, beauty etc.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT AS AN INFLUENCER?
Becoming an Influencer today is different from when I started. There are so many different platforms to join. I would say just start making content. Don’t wait for the most professional camera or lighting. Just make content and put it out there, see what gets a reaction and continue in that direction. It is impossible for brands to see every single creator online so don’t be afraid to reach out yourself and express why you would be a good fit to represent their company. That’s how I got my first brand deal. Remain confident and professional and something is bound happen.
