Interview with Award Winning Singer-Songwriter Emine Sari

Emine Sari is one of those rare things – a singer-songwriter that makes you sit up and listen.

She was born in a small city in Turkey and studied piano and foreign languages in order to fulfill her dream of becoming an international artist. Since her debut was released in 2008, Emine has won and been nominated in countless awards.

You can very rarely go wrong with Emine Sari. On her offerings, you get her smooth, yet smoky and sultry vocals. You get her wise playing; practically every ingredient needed for magic is here and magic is indeed what you get.

Not much else needs to be said. Established fans will already know what she’s about and I guess all interested parties need know is that if you’re looking for a relaxing but inspirational vocal pop-jazz or even ethnic performance, you need look no further.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE PERSONAL RELATIONS AND EXPERIENCES TO YOUR SONGWRITING? DO YOU TAKE A LOT FROM YOUR OWN LIFE AND WRITE ABOUT WHAT YOU GO THROUGH? HOW MUCH IS FICTIONALISED AND ABSTRACT, IN THAT SENSE?
Everything I write about is absolutely genuine and true. I write about my own experiences, my strengths and fears – and, sometimes, I’ll take lyrical inspiration from books. But, to me, songwriting is a form of therapy.

STAYING ON THE TOPIC OF SONGWRITING, YOU HAVE WRITTEN FOR SOME BIG ACTS. CREATIVELY HOW DO YOU BEGIN YOUR PROCESS WHEN PENNING A SONG? IS IT A MATTER OF DRAWING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OR ARE YOU ABLE TO KIND OF GET INSPIRED FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES AND GO FROM THERE?
As said, there’s always some personal experience that comes into songwriting but when I’m writing for other artists I’m very conscious of making the songs as relatable as possible. Of course, I do this for my artist project too although I allow myself a little bit more freedom to challenge people’s expectations with my own music. My favourite way to write a song is to merge my ideas at the piano with vocal melodies. I often have no idea what I’m going to write about until I have a melody which inspires the mood and the lyric. I’ve never been good at planning and the same goes for my songwriting process.

LISTENING TO YOUR LATEST TRACK “UNDER THE WATER”, AND THE RECEPTION YOU ARE GETTING, IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE IN A GOOD AND CREATIVE PERIOD. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE DEVELOPED AS A SONGWRITER THE LAST YEAR OR SO?
Yeah, Songs can be very healing and this one was no exception for me…
All I know is that the music people are responding to all happened as a result of trust. I wasn’t trying to please anyone. I wasn’t expecting anything to come of it. So, I want to continue to throw myself into completely organic situations and trust that sometimes we will have similar results. One thing I do feel is that I trust myself a lot more.

IS THERE GOING TO BE AN E.P. OR ALBUM ARRIVING AT SOME POINT?
Let’s just say there’s much more music coming your way….

THERE ARE A LOT OF PROMISING FEMALE SINGER-SONGWRITERS EMERGING AT THE MOMENT. HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOU DIFFER FROM THEM?
All I know is that I’m not trying to be someone that I’m not – and I definitely know I’m the only me around.

FOR ANY NEW MUSICIANS COMING THROUGH: CAN YOU GIVE THEM ANY ADVICE OR GUIDANCE?
The main advice is to persevere. Just trust that you’ll find where you need to be and never quit. There’s more than one way to make it.  If one doesn’t work, try another way. I have a blog which I started writing on quarantine for musicians (and not only) I share my inspirations little by little and I hope that they will inspire someones too… http://www.eminemusic.com/blog

Emine’s voice is lush and her arrangements are superb. A singer knows, it’s all in the delivery, and Emine can really deliver her lyrics with passion. She is a must for anyone who loves easy listening music.
